SPRING 2021 FEATURED PAINTINGS
Oil on Belgian Linen
Artists’ Subject / Development Notes :
This painting is a depiction of a “lagoon“ and is based on my time spent at Esquimalt , a saltwater lagoon near Fort Rodd and the lighthouse in Colwood on Victoria on Vancouver Island. It is a stunning area that functions as an important stopover and sanctuary for migrating birds as well as a natural habitat for many species of fish. It was a very important place for me during this time. This subject and space provided me a very special experience. The early morning light, space and atmosphere was truly magical but short lived and I enjoyed the challenge of articulating first light. Being able to be there and paint the tones directly from life helped greatly. I also worked from notes, sketches and memory and was able to fully invest and connect to the subject throughout the process.
As is often the key, life allowed me to spend the time needed to deeply experience the subject and capture the essence of a “lagoon".
Applied with oil paint on belgian linen developed “ en plein air ‘ and completed in studio , Spring 2020 .
